Project项目

Developed during an artist residency at Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre, the installation accumulated through small acts of writing, placing and repositioning. Each contribution entered a temporary shared arrangement. A word could be placed with certainty, moved by another person, or remain under Not sure. The work followed how ideas of home and belonging are articulated, interpreted and repositioned through ordinary language.

Artist’s note

This participatory project is called The Borrowing Library of Belonging. The rules are simple: write down a word or short phrase about “home,” then place it into one of three trays: Here / There / Not sure. You can also move what someone else wrote to a different tray, based on how you understand it.

Everyone has a different idea of home. It is a bit like going to the library for science fiction: Asimov and Liu Cixin tell completely different stories.

To me, the most beautiful part of this project is not only the words that get written down. It is the moment when a family stands in front of the trays, asking each other, “What should we write?” Or when someone simply stares at a blank slip of paper, thinking.

That is the tipping point just before a word is written, while it still remains unwritten—with a little excitement, a little uncertainty. A chaotic but precious moment.

Thank you to everyone willing to stand there and think for a moment.

Relation to the research

This residency project forms a parallel strand of artistic practice. It shares an interest in temporary placement, movement and ordinary language with the doctoral research, while operating through public participation rather than the one-week haptic loan structure.
